The Impact of Foreign Premiership Players on England

The premiership has developed into the most popular domestic soccer league in the world. It is the most watched sporting event and now generates billions of pounds a year. Although the premiership has gone from strength to strength, there are some observers who question whether the premiership has had an adverse effect on the England national side.

A subject that always provokes intense debate is the impact of foreign premiership players on England. The number of overseas players in the top division of English football has increased dramatically in the last decade. The concern is that too much overseas talent may hinder the development of home grown players. There is a counter argument that suggests playing alongside some of the best players in the world can only benefit members of the England squad.

There have been calls to limit the number of foreign players each premiership club is able to field at any one time. Such a rule would not be welcomed by the leading premier league clubs who would argue that there is not enough home grown talent of the required standard. Several years ago many clubs invested large sums of money setting up their own academies which were designed to develop the home grown stars of the future. In some cases, the academies have not produced the number of quality players that were anticipated but they should still be given encouragement and the opportunity to succeed.

When looking at the England squad on paper it does contain a number of the best players in the world. Much was expected of the current crop of England stars and in that respect it is fair to say that they have been guilty of under achieving. People often point to the high level of performance England players display every week in the premiership which is not repeated whilst playing for their country.
